Shelter Veterinarian / Medical Director

Location: Forest Park, IL

Schedule: Part-Time with Opportunity for Growth

Reports to: Executive Director

Starting Pay: $65-75/hr


Position Summary

The Shelter Veterinarian is responsible for providing high-quality, compassionate medical care to shelter animals, partner rescues, and the general public, with a primary focus on feline health, population on medicine, critical care, and infectious disease control. This role supports the organization’s mission by ensuring the health, welfare, and adoptability of cats through comprehensive medical treatment, surgical services, and preventive care.


Key Responsibilities

Medical Care & Treatment

  • Perform comprehensive exams, diagnostics, and medical treatment

  • Diagnose and manage acute, chronic, and infectious conditions

  • Develop and oversee treatment protocols

  • Prescribe and administer medications in compliance with regulations

  • Interpret imaging, bloodwork, and lab results to guide care

Shelter Operations & Collaboration

  • Partner with leadership on individualized treatment plans

  • Guide medical intake decisions for special-needs cats

  • Help develop SOPs supporting medical care and biosecurity

  • Participate in case reviews and medical planning

  • Maintain consistent communication with shelter staff

  • Perform high-volume spay/neuter and soft-tissue surgeries

  • Conduct amputations, ophthalmic procedures, and dental extractions

  • Provide urgent and minor emergency care

  • Oversee anesthesia, pain management, and post-op recovery

  • Maintain accurate surgical and medical documentation

Surgery & Clinical Care

  • Support clinic establishment, licensing, and regulatory processes

  • Maintain timely, accurate medical records

  • Ensure compliance with veterinary and animal welfare standards

  • Assist with inspections, audits, and licensing

Compliance & Medical Records


  • DVM/VMD from an accredited institution

  • Active Illinois veterinary license

  • Interest or experience in shelter and feline medicine

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, resource-conscious environment

  • High-volume spay/neuter experience preferred

  • Familiarity with clinic startup regulations a plus

Qualifications

  • Shelter or rescue veterinary background

  • Feline-focused clinical experience

  • Infectious disease management in group-housing environments
